food of love

As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans.

Ernest Hemingway

Am not at all sure how I stumbled across Ms. Minato’s 365 day food diary,
but it certainly is a visual delight. I’m also a sucker for jelly coffees and wooden spoons.

lately…

I’ve been restless as of late. Since I’ve come back from my short little trip, I been finding it more and more difficult to sit still. To listen to my mind. I’ve been overcome with inspiration and thought.  So I’ve decided to strip my cork board of past muses and start fresh again. I feel Mother Nature thought of the same thing. Thunderstorms crack over the city, washing our sins clean and sweet fresh winds whip through my apartment.

I am cooking more and more.
My favourite so far? Salmon stir fry with a side of spinach tortellini and greens.
I sent this photo to my the Mothership, mainly to prove that she hadn’t wasted all her culinary coaching after all.

While cleaning/re-organizing my room I’ve managed to find a pile of dust covered disposable cameras all waiting to be developed!
I can’t even begin to imagine the images they may hold, and I am hoping they haven’t expired to terribly. I’m especially intrigued to see what the LOL cam carries and if any of the fun comic details turned out.

I always marvel at the amount of colour that saturates my wardrobe in the summer time. So bright and print obsessed, the complete opposite of my usually more muted/goth/grungy winter palette. I have promised my self that this year I will continue on the color parade right through the bleakest of our city’s winter months. A little leopard madness is exactly what I need to beat the moody blues.

Style Crush: Hanneli Mustaparta

Oh, Hanneli! What’s not to love? This model turned blogging super star is a champion at tom-boyishly charming yet minimalistic chic. It’s as if she casually picks garments up off the side of her bed, throws it all on and emerges looking ever so effortless. I’m particularly enchanted by her white Peter Jensen wide cute dress paired with the chunky Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony platform boots.  The entire ensemble is so light and breezy, perfect for a day whipping about New York City. Toasted as the second most powerful blogger on the planet by Net-a-Porter, I am sure we shall be seeing more and more of Ms. Mustaparta’s laid back, modern elegance.

Her Look My Way:

  1. Riess Dress: This shirts dress is simply perfect for you can cinch it at the waste or simply leave it lose and oversized. The length of this number leaves it perfect for biking about the city as well.  Available at Asos.

  2. Miu Miu leather satchel: Instead of the baby blue Mulberry satchel Hanneli is rocking, I’ve opted for this classic eggshell leather Miu Miu number instead. The strap detailing, gold hardware and supple finish paired with the dress give it a bit of a schoolgirl vibe I adore.  Available at Net-a-Porter.

  3. Aldo Espadrille Wedge: A decent espadrille is hard to find, so these black lace-up pumps are fantastic for both play and stepping lively at work. Functionality and trendy, what more could a girl ask for? Available at Aldo.

  4. American Apparel Nail Lacquer in Office: We’ve been rocking the latest AA pastel shades in house all spring long. Two bottles in the ‘Office” shade seems to be the most popular to date and compliments the creams and eggshell of this look splendidly. Available at American Apparel.

Markus Lupfer 2012 Resort Film

Possibly the smartest campaign video I’ve seen in quite sometime, Markus Lupfer gathers a few of his most favourite ladies for this science documentary farce directed by Tabitha Denholm. Big model names include my favourite Canadian cool kid Irina Lazareanu, current Louis Vuitton face Mary Charteris and super songbird Florence Welch as possessed little minions in Dr.Lupfer’s laboratory.
Check out the video below.

And you can shop for a few sweet Markus Lupfer pieces here.

Midsomer Music

On heavy rotation this week!

  1. The Horrors – Still Life
A total gem of a record! You must listen to the album – the Skying- if you haven’t already.

  2. Grimes – Vanessa
Rumour has it she’ll be rocking our fair city some day soon. I’ve got my ear to the ground for delicious clues.

  3. SBTRKT – Wildfire ft Little Dragon.
Watched him and Sampha preform live as part of Best Birthday of Life. Then Drake showed up and I thought Wrongbar was going to explode with sweat and joy.

  4. Fucked Up – Queens of Heart.
David Comes to Life is easily the best record FU have produced to date. I can’t imagine where this will take the Toronto troupe.

  5. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – The Body
Summer steeped with nostalgia. This video sums it up pretty nicely.

  6. Emeli Sande – Heaven
I cannot express my love for UK garage, as it’s beats per second have pretty much shaped my youth. I am so happy that the genre is making a proper come back, and this track is certainly one of the best this summer. Guaranteed it’ll rip through Europe like a storm.

food for thought #1

In an attempt to become a little more domestic,
I’ve decided to roll up my sleeves and get in to the culinary game!
With serious baby steps of course and with the help of my lovely sisters as guinea pigs.
Seeing as kid sister was not feeling well, I decided to whip up her favourite.
Nummy Nummy Fish Tacos! So easy, breezy and perfect for brain melting hot days.

I marinated the talapia in a mix of cumin, olive oil, lime juice, salt, pepper and garlic for a few hours in the fridge before popping it in to the oven to bake. Turned out nice and moist and crumbled easily.

Threw together a mixed bean salad, seeing as I don’t think I’ve eaten a lettuce leaf in what feels like forever.
Disgusting I know.

Voila! All set and ready to nom nom. I put far more cilantro in my tacos though. I’m obsessed with that little herb.

Dessert! Purple icy goodness to take the edge of the intense salsa fire alarm bells ringing in my mouth.
Seeing as this meal wasn’t an epic fail, I’m excited to try a few more recipes! And maybe I’ll be up to the crazy Luxirare standards (eugh, quail eggs? Simple breakfast tart? I WISH).

† Cy Twombly

Goodnight, King.
Cover the skies with your scribbles,
the stars as your ink.

whoops, it’s been a while

I’ve been back a week now,
and I do apologize for the lack of posts.
Since I’ve landed,
I’ve embraced Toronto in the tightest of  hugs.
Have barely been home since.
Pride and Canada Day celebrations have made it nearly impossible.
But I am certainly not complaining!
It’s been one incredibly sun drunk few weeks,
and I am so very blessed.

Here is to more adventure in the near future.
Till then promise to be back with more
random ditherings,
wants/needs,
mega music playlists
and general what have yous.

the singing door.

As the hot wind blows,
the door creaks.
Much too loud,
I fear it will wake
the girls from their sleep.

Sometimes,
as its eerie sound
cracks open my night.
I lay in bed with my eyes open,
searching.
Wishing,
hoping,
hazily dreaming that you will
walk through the door
and the last ten years have been nothing
but a rip in time.
A lost and lonely dimension.

The cat does not stir anymore.
As she hums in her sleep
at the foot of my bed.
She no longer hears the door sigh,
or my breath shallow, deep and raw
that follows soon after.
